Beginning in 1837 with the arrival of the first missionaries from America, new converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Britain were learning of a new book of scripture which expanded understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ. This book, known as The Book of Mormon, is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It complements and supports the Holy Bible.

Demand for the book quickly overwhelmed the supply, and efforts were made to secure the copyright so a new edition of The Book of Mormon could be printed locally. Funds for the printing were also in short supply.
